IGBMC is delighted to welcome Andrey Klymchenko, CNRS Research Director and head of the Photoactive Materials and Bioimaging team at the Laboratoire de Bioimagerie et Pathologies (LBP), in Strasbourg.

A specialist in fluorescent probes and nanomaterials, he explores how chemistry can render visible, at the molecular scale, the intimate workings of cells and their membranes.

An inventive chemist, Andrey Klymchenko has focused on designing smart fluorescent tools capable of probing and visualizing living systems at the molecular and cellular levels. His team develops a wide palette of probes targeting plasma and organellar membranes, combining covalent and non-covalent labelling strategies, reversible fluorogenic systems for super-resolution imaging, and solvatochromic probes able to reveal lipid organization and chromatin packing state.

This research, with promising applications in medical diagnostics and targeted therapies, opens up prospects ranging from the ultrasensitive detection of biomarkers to the design of nanosensors for bioactive molecules, such as neurotransmitters. It is now being translated toward the clinic, through the start-ups BrightSens Diagnostics and AstraNICE, supported by SATT CONECTUS.

International scientific recognition (an ERC Advanced Grant, CaptuRel, obtained in 2025, the CNRS silver medal in 2026, membership of Academia Europaea), a commitment to fundamental research and its translation into applications: Andrey Klymchenko embodies chemistry in the service of living systems.

His talk "Fluorescent probes for sensing and imaging biomembranes: from cell surface to organelles" will be a rare opportunity to delve into the design of molecular probes and to exchange with a researcher who knows how to make the invisible visible.
