This distinction recognizes more than ten years of work that has led to major advances in medical research.

His research uncovered a previously unsuspected role of a portion of DNA long considered “silent,” which nevertheless accounts for 98% of the human genome. Certain mutations in these regions can produce abnormal and toxic proteins, affecting neurons and muscle cells and causing severe neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases.

This work opens up an entirely new field of research, offering new perspectives for diagnosis and, ultimately, for the treatment of rare diseases that remain unexplained.

The Medical Research Prizes thus honor work that brings tangible innovations for patients.
