Hematopoiesis and Disease

Hematopoiesis and Disease

Hematopoiesis begins with pluripotent stem cells and ends in the production of lymphoid, myeloid and erythroid cells. This process occurs throughout life, and is controlled by transcriptional regulators required for cell identity and function. Our lab studies the Ikaros family of transcription factors, which are important as differentiation agents and tumor suppressors, and whose mutations are implicated in leukemias, immunodeficiencies and autoimmune diseases. Specifically, we address the following questions:

  • How do Ikaros family proteins regulate blood cell development?
  • Why do alterations in their function contribute to disease?
  • What do our studies of the Ikaros family reveal about fundamental principles of transcription?
