Eukaryotic mRNA decay

While the main mRNA decay pathway involves the 5’ to 3’ degradation of the mRNA body, 3’ to 5’ exonucleolytic mRNA trimming has been shown to play a major role for the elimination of defective, poorly translatable transcripts. Factors involved in the latter pathway are altered in a rare human genetic disease, underlining its importance. In this context, we are testing the role of these factors in pathological conditions. Moreover, we have identified new factors associated with 3’-5’ mRNA decay and are actively pursuing their characterization.
