Photonic microscopy: a new engineer entirely dedicated to image analysis

Plateformes et services |

Marco Dalla Vecchia joined the Photonic Microscopy platform as a research engineer in image analysis on August 1st. Joining the platform's team of 6 people, Marco Dalla Vecchia's mission is to assist users in the analysis of bioimages acquired with the photonic microscopy equipment.

Marco Dalla Vecchia, engineer specialized in the analysis of microscopy images

Marco Dalla Vecchia first studied in Italy before completing his master's degree in molecular and physiological biology at the University of Leuven in Belgium. He graduated in 2015 and went on to do his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Biotechnology in the same city in co-supervision with:

- Peter Vandenabele, from the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research

- Peter Dedecker, from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) Institute

Currently at the end of his thesis, his project is entitled "FRET, biosensing tools and techniques for advanced fluorescence microscopy". To read one of the latest articles published with Marco Dalla Vecchia as first author: click here.

An engineer specialized in bioimages analysis to reinforce the platform's offer

Marco Dalla Vecchia's position is entirely dedicated to the analysis of bioimages acquired on the instruments of the Photonic Microscopy Platform or external collaborators within Unistra. His role is to support the teams and their research projects with their analysis of images data. Marco is also available to develop new tools to adapt to the specific needs of research projects. Marco’s arrival will greatly help to increase the level of support for image processing and analysis which has been identified has a most appreciated added-value to the services the light microscopy facility does offer.

IGBMC is an institute that takes great care of its equipment, with a quality IT service, according to the engineer

Although Marco Dalla Vecchia was not yet following the IGBMC before joining the institute, the engineer says he is "delighted with the quality of the work environment. He mentions in particular "the care taken with the quality control and maintenance of the microscopes, which shows that people are competent and have a good consideration of the place in which they work". He also "praises" the IGBMC IT support for the quality of their "assistance on network and hardware issues, as well as their pedagogy on how to use the internal infrastructure".

In parallel to his job, Marco Dalla Vecchia maintains a website with information on all things related with image analysis. You can consult it at this address: https://igbmc.gitlab.io/mic-photon/image-analysis-hub/

Additionally, the engineer is already planning a workshop on the Python programming language targeted at the institute's doctoral students.
